Problems with links "shearing off"
#1
Hi Guys

I am having real problems with links on one part of the electric gate.

One one leaf, there have been no problems at all, but in the other the link has "sheared" 3 times in 18 months.

Can anyone help? The gate is now out of warranty, and the installer is refusing to come back - and even if he does he will not give a warranty.

He designed and fitted the gates but he is more of a railings and garden gate manufacturer - I only found out afterwards he does not specialise in electric gates !!!

I would rather get some good advice from someone who does this full time for a living.

There is obviously a problem with the motor/linkage coping with that one leaf, is there plenty of grease on all moving parts? including the motor link arms and top hinge? thats a bit of a scary install to be honest, never put the motor termination boxes in the motor foundation box!!! i bet there isnt any sufficient drainage on the boxes either, any standing rainwater you will have serious problems.

Thanks Carl

The parts were not greased up, so something we need to consider when we get the replacement linkage.

re: motor termination box - I agree 100% - the guy who installed just did not have a clue. We kept getting electrical problems after the first install. The only solution was to put some "electrical putty" in the joint box - since the electrics have been OK.

re: drainage - that seems to be ok - water seems to drain fairly fast.

As well as the grease, anything else you can recommend?

Cheers

The Install of these motors is not very good ! The Junction boxes should NEVER be made in the ground box.

The Problem seems to be that the gate is moving beyond its limits and seems that on both boxes the side of the ground box has been dented and bent by the link arms. To me this either means the gates are moving past the maximum allowd travel of 110 degrees or the stops are not set correctly.

First thing i would do is check the boxes are fitted square ie check the levels in all directions that they dont run out.

Then check the stops to make sure the gate does not move more than 110 degrees and the stops engage in corect possition.

Then i would reprogram the circuit board so the motors hit the stop for half a second then cut out ie alter the run times.
