Potential Encoder Issue
#1
Hi guys,

I've just moved into a property with a set of Nice gates. The panel is an M824H and the motors themselves are 2 Toona 5's. I have installed a Remootio smart box in it.

A couple of weeks ago I noticed they were opening and shutting by themselves on repeat. We fixed it by holding them open for about 30 mins and then it closed properly.

However the issue came back again a couple of days ago. Upon investigation, where the electric arm was attached to the gate it had rotted through, and the gate was continuing further than it's normal close point. I think this was in turn triggering the photo cells and causing it to bounce open and close endlessly. So I fixed it by drilling through the gate and bolting it to the arm instead of the screws that had originally been used.

However, there is still an issue. Now the other gate was getting halfway open and causing an obstruction issue (3 flashes on the blue bus). I took it apart and re greased it, and noticed that the plastic cog on the worm gear was slightly catching, but nothing major. I put it back together, and it made no difference. I have since attempted to re program it to see if that might help, but it won't let me do it. On one of the gates, it won't complete the auto position finding , and if I try it manually the gate will move for half a second then stop again.

My guess is that the encoder has an issue on that gate and it needs a new motor. However, having no experience in this other than what I have read, I wanted to check on here before I ordered a new one.

Again, currently I can't work the gates at all, simply because I can't get through the positioning cycle, so I am stuck with L3 and L4 flashing at me.

If anyone has any advice, then I am all ears.

Thanks

Ben

Hi Ben,

Have you tried running this motor arm when it is off the gate? If you are still getting the same issue when there is no load there is either going to be an issue with the internals on the motor which is causing resistance therefore triggering the reversal fault. Or an issue with the encoder.

Usually with encoder faults, the gate will run quickly for a second or so and then stop. So in this case I do not think the encoder is going to be the issue. I believe that something internally is putting up resistance against the motor, one way to try and resolve this would be to increase the force which is done in 'Level Two Programming'. But this is more than likely going to be a temporary fix until the motor faults again.

I hope this was useful.

Many Thanks,

Aiden.
